Brisbane Seniors Month kicks off

Brisbane City Council’s month-long program of activities for Queensland Seniors Month kicks off today with more than 420 events across the suburbs – and almost 80% are completely free.

From Tai Chi to tennis, seniors can enjoy hundreds of Active and Healthy sessions designed to keep minds and bodies moving.

“Brisbane is Australia’s lifestyle capital and remains the best place to live, work and relax at every stage of life,” said Lord Mayor, Adrian Schrinner.

“Seniors Month is about celebrating the contributions of our older residents who have helped make Brisbane the incredible place it is today.

“We’re making sure there are free and affordable activities right across the city this October, so senior residents can get together and celebrate our fantastic lifestyle without stretching the budget.”

Brisbane’s 33 libraries will host 18 special events, including the launch of the Old is Beautiful photography exhibition at Brisbane Square Library, where older residents share their wisdom on beauty and ageing through the lens.

Residents are making the most of easier, more affordable transport, with free off-peak travel helping seniors get around the city.

This year, seniors have already taken around three million off-peak trips on CityCats, ferries, buses and the Brisbane Metro, saving money while staying connected.

The Schrinner Council is also easing cost-of-living pressures with the most generous pensioner rebate in south east Queensland, giving seniors up to $1298 a year in savings.
