Third round of tourism vouchers rolling out

More than $18 million has been generated in the Territory’s tourism sector, as a result of the territory government’s tourism voucher scheme.

The vouchers were first announced in June 2020, to encourage Territorians to explore their own backyards and support the local tourism industry, while interstate borders were closed.

“These vouchers have been a lifeline for our tourism sector – they’ve kept business afloat and Territorians in jobs,” said Minister for Tourism and Hospitality, Natasha Fyles.

“We know how hard the industry has suffered as a result of international and interstate border closures, and this is why we introduced this popular scheme.”

She said the success of the highly-popular first round has since led to two additional instalments, which have helped keep tourism ticking over during the traditionally low season.

In round 1, which ran from 1 July – 31 October 2020:

  • 24,700 vouchers were redeemed
  • $9.7 million was generated into the economy

In round 2, which ran from 2 November – 31 January 2021:

  • 20,000 vouchers were redeemed
  • $7.6 million was generated into the economy

For both rounds of the scheme, staycations proved the most popular for Territorians, with almost 50% of round 1 and 60% of round 2 vouchers spent on accommodation. Fishing charters, boat hire and tour services were also popular.

“Territorians have been incredible in exploring their backyards, and backing local,” the Minister said.

“The pandemic is still very real, and with the return of international travel off the cards for the foreseeable future, we know we must keep doing everything we can to support our tourism operators.”

The third round of the Territory Tourism Voucher scheme is currently being rolled out, and so far almost 1,900 vouchers have been redeemed, generating an additional $896,000 into the economy.

Territorians who receive a voucher have 14 days to redeem it.

Unredeemed vouchers will be returned to the pool and be re-issued to Territorians on the waitlist, with all travel and experiences to be completed by 30 April 2021.
