Hundreds of Brisbane residents will sleep in their cars tomorrow night to raise awareness of the plight of homeless women aged over 55 – among them will be Brisbane Lady Mayoress, Nina Schrinner.
The Lady Mayoress is the patron of ‘The Forgotten Women’ and the force behind the ‘Live Like Her Challenge’ that will take place at Brisbane Airport tomorrow night.
She will be joined in the challenge by well-known Brisbane women, Tracey Watkins, Carla Haddan of Place Real Estate, and CEO of The Forgotten women, Teresa Reed.
“Right now, there are more than 700 women over the age of 55 in Brisbane who don’t have a safe and secure place to sleep at night, and sadly this number is expected to more than double by 2036,” the Lady Mayoress said.
“These could be our mothers, aunts, sisters, and daughters, and we have a duty to help them. A car is not a home, but this is a reality for too many women.”
White Label Noba, a fashion label known for its celebration of women of all ages and sizes, is donating all sales from white tracksuits sold between 6pm this Thursday and 6am this Friday to ‘The Forgotten Women’ – the Brisbane ladies will be donning the tracksuits for their sleep-out effort.
“There’s a fine line between being at the top and being at the bottom – it could happen to any one of us,” said Tracey Watkins.
“By donating the sales from the sale of white tracksuits, White Label Noba is taking a proactive step toward helping these women regain their footing and find safe, secure housing.”
Carla Haddan, lead agent and partner at Place Estate Agents’ One Group, together with her colleagues, have a target to raise $1million over the next five years to donate to The Forgotten Women charity, standing by women and the community in this important cause.
“Place’s mission is to help clients find “their happy place” and everyone deserves that; supporting this charity is like extending that mission to provide a meaningful home and a fresh start for homeless women,” Carla said.
Teresa Reed, the founder of ‘The Forgotten Women,’ said, “If we reach our goal of raising $250,000 in this year’s ‘Live Like Her Challenge,’ it will help on our mission to put a roof over the head of every homeless woman over 55.”
