The City of Canning held a Pioneers Tea yesterday to celebrate community members who have lived within the City’s boundaries for 50 years or more.
A total of 150 pioneers enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea at the historic Woodloes Homestead.
Mayor Patrick Hall and Heritage Officer, Geoff Moor welcomed attendees who spent the afternoon catching up with friends, old and new whilst regaling stories from a bygone era and enjoying the soft sounds of The Avenue Jazz Band and admiring a display of enlarged historic photos provided by Mr Moor.
Mayor Hall said it was a privilege to be in the same space as those who have called Canning home for the past 50 years or more, with many of the attendees aged in their 80’s and 90’s and a number of residents who had remarkably lived in the Canning district for more than 80 years.
“Thank you to these pioneers for contributing to the area’s community and heritage when Canning grew from a semi-rural district to become part of the greater metropolitan area of Perth,” said Mayor Hall.
“A lot has changed over the years, however one thing still rings true and that is a shared and unique sense of community and belonging in Canning.”
