Queensland Seniors Volunteering Project

Giving Back, Staying Connected

As we age, life often encourages us to slow down—but what if giving more of ourselves is the key to feeling more vibrant, connected, and fulfilled? The Queensland Seniors Volunteering Project is proving just that, offering older Queenslanders the chance to make a difference while enriching their own lives.

Why Volunteering Matters for Seniors

Volunteering is more than just giving your time—it’s a way to stay active, meet new people, and experience the joy of making a difference. Research shows that volunteering can combat loneliness and improve mental and physical health. It fosters a sense of purpose and belonging, helping seniors stay socially connected and engaged in their communities (1).

In fact, more than 52% of Queenslanders aged 65 and over already volunteer, contributing thousands of hours to causes that matter most to them. Their efforts strengthen communities, support local services, and create a ripple effect of care and compassion across the state (3).

The Volunteer Ambassadors Program: Leading by Example

At the heart of this initiative is the Senior Volunteer Ambassadors Program, a unique feature designed to inspire and guide others on their volunteering journey. Ambassadors are experienced volunteers who act as mentors, helping seniors navigate opportunities, build confidence, and find roles that match their skills and interests.

These ambassadors don’t just talk about volunteering—they live it. They share their stories, offer practical advice, and provide one-on-one support to ensure new volunteers feel welcomed and empowered. By doing so, they create a supportive network that encourages more seniors to take the first step toward giving back (2)

The Impact: Changing Lives and Communities

The benefits of volunteering extend far beyond the individual. Seniors who volunteer report improved wellbeing, stronger social connections, and a renewed sense of purpose. Communities benefit too—volunteers help deliver essential services, support local events, and contribute to programs that make Queensland a better place for everyone (2).

From mentoring young people to caring for the environment, the opportunities are as diverse as the volunteers themselves. Whether you have an hour a week or a few days a month, your contribution matters. Every act of service—big or small—creates positive change. (4)
