A little support makes a big difference when living with dementia

Dementia Action Week 2022 runs from Monday 19 September to Sunday 25 September. This year’s theme is ‘A little support makes a big difference’.

A 2021 Dementia Australia survey found 65% of respondents who live with dementia believe discrimination towards people with dementia is common or very common. We know discrimination has a big impact on people living with dementia, their families and carers, and a little support from the community and health care professionals can make a big difference.

Dementia Australia is encouraging communities to come together during Dementia Action Week and learn more about how they can support people living with dementia.

A better understanding of dementia can help you make a positive difference to the lives of people who are impacted by dementia – and help eliminate discrimination. What people can’t see they don’t understand and what they don’t understand they tend to avoid.

The impacts of discrimination can be significant and wide-ranging. Australian and international studies show that stigma and discrimination associated with a dementia diagnosis can discourage people from seeking health care, including a diagnosis, and reduce social engagement with family, friends and the broader community. This can have serious consequences for the physical, cognitive and psychosocial health of the person living with dementia.

Through this national campaign, Dementia Australia continues to lead the discussion about discrimination and dementia, and – through greater awareness – support people to access an early diagnosis.

For someone with memory concerns, an early diagnosis means also means that people can access vital support and resources sooner, to help maximise quality of life and plan for the future. If you are noticing changes in cognition in you or a loved one, Dementia Australia is here for you.

Dementia Australia offers support in getting a diagnosis and connecting you with appropriate services that will help you to live well with dementia.

During and beyond Dementia Action Week, you can help to share content across your personal and professional networks to ensure the tips and tools continue to increase people’s knowledge and awareness of dementia. This shareable content can continue to be downloaded and shared via email and social media. Help spread the word by using the hashtag #DementiaActionWeek.
