Some of Victoria’s most iconic buildings will be lit up in yellow this week in memory and support of those who have been impacted by road trauma.
Victorian Minister for Roads and Road Safety, Melissa Horne, today joined hundreds of Victorians who gathered at Melbourne’s Albert Park (pictured) for the Amber Community’s annual Shine a Light on Road Safety walk.
“Every life lost on our roads is one too many and as we come into National Road Safety Week, I urge everyone to take extra care behind the wheel so Victorians can get back home to their families safely,” said the Minister.
Throughout the week, iconic buildings will be lit up in the campaign’s trademark yellow – including Melbourne Town Hall, Flinders Street Station, the Bolte Bridge, Box Hill Town Hall, the CityLink Sound Tube, and 101 Collins Street.
The campaign, which coincides with National Road Safety Week, comes off the back of a tragic start to 2024 with 96 lives lost on Victorian roads so far this year.
“No one should have their life impacted by road trauma and the TAC is proud to support Shine a Light on Road Safety, and National Road Safety Week, to inspire Victorians to look out for each other and drive safely,” said Transport Accident Commission CEO, Tracey Slatter.
The Victorian Government is working with the Federal Government to roll out vital safety upgrades across nearly 200 sites and routes across the state as part of a $457 million Road Safety Program.
Amber Community, which is supported by the Transport Accident Commission (TAC), provides counselling and support services to more than 3000 Victorians affected by road trauma.
“Every life is precious, and every serious injury is avoidable – we unite to challenge complacency about road safety, and aim is to make a difference in reducing the impact that road trauma has on our community,” said Amber Community CEO, Bernadette Nugent.
