Victoria launches Australia’s first Veterans Card

The Victorian Government has today officially launched a state discount card for veterans in what it says is an Australian-first.

Victorian Minister for Veterans, Natalie Suleyman and the Member for Lara Ella George today visited Lara RSL (pictured) to officially launch the Veterans Card – Victoria, which recognises the service and sacrifices made by all current and former Australian Defence Force members.

“The Veterans Card has received the largest single investment by any state government towards veterans initiatives and is one of the many ways we’re honouring the veteran community,” said Ms Suleyman.

“We’re incredibly proud to provide Australian Defence Force members in Victoria with essential support and benefits. Nothing can repay the debt of service but the Veterans Card is our way of saying thank you.”

The State Government has invested more than $36 million over four years in the digital card, which has already been taken up by more than 6,000 veterans.

The Veterans Card provides eligible veterans with discounted registration for one light vehicle, free trailer and caravan registration, a marine (boating) licence, free public transport on Anzac Day and Remembrance Day, a fishing licence exemption, and access to the Victorian Government veteran-specific employment programs.

“The digital wallet in the Service Victoria app is being used by thousands of people every day. Veterans can access the Veterans Card now on the app or website to get a great range of discounts,” said Minister for Government Services, Danny Pearson.

Anyone living in Victoria who has served or is currently serving in the Australian Defence Force is eligible for the Veterans Card – Victoria.

“A veteran’s contribution doesn’t end when they leave the Defence Force – we want to support them through the next stage of their life and easing the cost of living is one way we can help,” said Member for Lara, Ella George.

“Veterans have given so much for Victoria and Australia and they deserve our ongoing recognition, appreciation and support.”

All eligible members of the veteran community can apply through either the Service Victoria website or the Service Victoria app on their smartphone.
