Brisbane’s Toombul bus interchange will reopen from Monday, allowing more than 1,500 bus services to return to the site.
In announcing the reopening, Brisbane Lord Mayor, Adrian Schrinner thanked local councillor, Adam Allan, for his strong advocacy on behalf of northside residents following negotiations between Council and site-owner Mirvac.
“The closure of Toombul Shopping Centre is a huge loss for the community, but we aren’t going to let this important transport hub be another victim of the devastating 2022 floods,” Cr Schrinner said.
“I am extremely pleased that our ongoing negotiations have led to this bus interchange being reinstated, with services to return from Monday 6 June, pending Translink approval.
“With severe flood damage to the Toombul Interchange we were able to keep services running from a temporary stop on Grace Street, but this was not ideal for residents wanting to catch the bus, or other motorists in the area.
“Throughout our ongoing negotiations with the private land holder, we have been able to relocate fencing, return power and water to the site and reach an agreement that will see this interchange reopened to residents, despite the rest of the site being closed.
“This interchange provides a safe and comfortable place for people to catch the bus, that includes shelter, seating, ticketing and toilets.”
Northgate Ward Councillor Allan said the Toombul interchange was critical for his local community.
“This bus stop is directly opposite the Toombul train station and many residents, including school children and the elderly, rely on this interchange every single day,” Cr Allan said.
“Since the floods I have been in regular contact with Mirvac to ensure the transport needs of residents were heard and prioritised while the permanent future of the site is determined.
“Residents catching services from a temporary bus stop was not an acceptable long-term solution, and I am pleased that just 14 weeks after the site was devastated by the floods, we have been able to return services to the interchange.
“The active collaboration and support from Mirvac allowed us to reach an outcome that ensures residents have safe and easy access onto public transport.
“I thank residents for their patience as we continue to rebuild and recover across our city after the floods.”
The Toombul Interchange will reopen from Monday 6 June. The stop services route 300, 301, 306, 307, 308, 321, 322, 326, 327, 369, 590, 598, 599, district school services and the Australian Catholic University shuttle.
