Southport motorcyclist charged after officer and Police horses injured

A 40-year-old Southport man has been charged after an alleged dangerous driving incident that caused injury to police horses and officers on the Gold Coast on Saturday night.

In a statement, Queensland Police said that at around 12.20am on 17 January, officers from the Mounted Unit patrolling Surfers Paradise stopped a red Ducati motorcycle on Elkhorn Avenue.

“When officers approached to speak with the rider on horseback, it will be alleged he accelerated away, striking two police horses,” Police said.

“As a result, one of the officers was thrown from the horse.

“Both the officer and police horses sustained minor injuries.”

The motorcycle rider was taken into custody at the scene and has since been charged with two counts of unlawfully killing or injuring a police horse, one count of driving without due care and attention, and one count of drive under the influence.

He is due to appear before Southport Magistrates Court on the 22 February.
