Smoke alarm sees Australian War Memorial evacuated

The Australian War Memorial was evacuated today after an automatic smoke alarm was triggered in the building this morning.

“At approximately 10.20am today, 11 January 2022, an automatic alarm was triggered at the Australian War Memorial. All visitors and staff were immediately and safely evacuated,” the AWM said in a statement this afternoon.

“The alarm was triggered by smoke in the building’s air conditioning system. There was no active fire within the building.”

The Memorial re-opened to the public at 11:45am.
