Police call for elderly witness to fatal crash

Forensic Crash Unit officers investigating a fatal motorbike crash near Mackay yesterday are appealing for a specific witness to come forward.

Police say an elderly man driving a green Ford utility east on Sugarshed Road is believed to have been one of the first motorists to come across the scene at Erakala and may have information that could assist.

“Investigators are asking the man, or anyone else with information, to come forward,” Queensland Police said in a statement.

“The 11-year-old girl who was a pillion passenger on the motorcycle was airlifted to Townsville Hospital and remains in a critical condition.”

Police say that at around 1.45pm, a motorcycle was heading along Sugarshed Road west of Ridolfis Road when it collided with a white ute travelling in the opposite direction.

Emergency services responded and rendered first aid to the rider, a man aged 59. He later died in hospital.

The 30-year-old man driving the white ute was not physically injured.
