Prime Minister Scott Morrison has tested positive for COVID-19.
Mr Morrison is reportedly experiencing “flu-like symptoms” as he isolates at home in Sydney.
His wife, Jenny, and the couple’s two daughters have so far tested negative but are also isolating for seven days in line with health directions as close contacts of the Prime Minister.
Mr Morrison had been due to appear at an event in Sydney last night but cancelled after falling ill. He had been due to flick the switch to light up the Sydney Opera House in blue and yellow as a sign of support for Ukraine.
It’s thought he had earlier tested negative to COVID-19 using a rapid antigen test.
Journalists attending a press conference on Tuesday afternoon had noticed the Prime Minister had a persistent cough.
Just before midnight last night, Mr Morrison’s office confirmed he had tested positive for the virus.
“I took a further test this evening after developing a fever late today,” the PM said.
“The test was inconclusive so I took a PCR test tonight which returned a positive result late this evening.”
He said he would continue to work while in isolation, including focusing on the “emergency response to the devastating floods in Queensland and NSW and ensuring we stand with each and every one of the affected communities both now and as the waters eventually recede”.
Mr Morrison was also expected to take a call with Ukrainian President, Volodymr Zelensky last night – it’s unknown if the call took place.
