Passenger, 78, killed in Gilgandra crash

A 78-year-old woman has died following a single-vehicle crash in the state’s Orana region yesterday.

Police say that at around 1pm on Tuesday, emergency services were called to a crash on the Newell Highway, about 10km south of Gilgandra.

Police believe the vehicle left the roadway and crashed into a tree down an embankment.

“The driver – an 80-year-old man – was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital, where he remains in a serious but stable condition,” NSW Police said in a statement.

“The female passanger was freed from the vehicle and died a short time later. She is yet to be formally idenfiied but is believed to be aged 78.”

Officers attached to Orana Mid-Western Police District established a crime scene, which was examined by specialist police from the Crash Investigation Unit.

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is underway and anyone who may have dashcam footage or information are urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1900 333 000.
