NT marks 50th anniversary of Legislative Assembly

The Northern Territory Government is this week celebrating the 50th anniversary of the first Legislative Assembly.

On November 20th 1974, the 19 members of the first Legislative Assembly met in the Chamber for the first sittings of a fully elected legislature in Northern Territory history.

The Legislative Assembly took the place of the previous Legislative Council, which, since 1947, had been partially elected and partially appointed by the Federal Government.

To commemorate 50 years of fully elected representation in the Territory, an open day will be held at Parliament House on Saturday November 23rd from 9am to 2pm.

The open day will include guided tours for members of the public, and displays will be set up across the foyer.

The Speaker has invited members from the 1970s to the present day to speak on the Assembly’s highlights from each decade. The speeches will start at 10am and will be broadcast from the Chamber at the Legislative Assembly of the Northern Territory website.
