It’s’ time to celebrate the hidden heroes of Brisbane, with the 2024 Lord Mayor’s Australia Day Awards nominations now open.
Lord Mayor, Adrian Schrinner said the awards are a chance to recognise the individuals and community groups who make Brisbane even better.
“Australia Day is a day that we come together as a city and a nation to recognise what it means to be Australian,” Cr Schrinner said.
“The best part of Brisbane has always been our people, and these awards provide our communities a chance to champion the incredible work of those that embody our city’s values.
“With previous winners ranging from charity volunteers to sportspeople and even hometown heroes who have stopped crimes from occurring, there is no shortage of nominees in our suburbs.”
With 10 categories to choose from, nominations open today and run till Monday 30 October.
2023 Australia Day Award winners included Citizen of the Year George Rowlinson, a dedicated volunteer with the Everton Park Scouts Group for several decades whose resourcefulness and leadership ensured the Scouts community stayed connected and informed throughout the pandemic.
The awards also recognised joint Young Citizens of the Year Chantelle Giles and Tom Price, who have undertaken incredible work across the disaster relief and mental health areas respectively.
Cr Schrinner said the awards are a chance to tell the stories often left untold.
“Part of our Australian spirit is not wanting to toot our own horn, and many of the award winners would have never put themselves forward for something like this,” he said.
“But thanks to the nominations of the community, we are able to hear the heart-warning stories of the people that go above and beyond in Brisbane and celebrate their contribution to the city.
“Whether it is a friend, neighbour, local business or community group that makes your suburb extra special, I encourage you to nominate someone you feel makes Brisbane an even better place to live.”
