NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) opened three new community toilet blocks at Burrawang Reach just before Christmas – but, disappointingly, vandals have now struck four times.
NPWS is asking visitors to watch out for vandals who they say have repeatedly pulled doors off hinges and destroyed locks, likely in the evenings before 9pm.
“There have now been four attacks at either Burrawang Reach or Skiers toilet blocks near Burrawang Reach picnic area in Georges River National Park,” the Service said in a statement.
NPWS has upped security and installed cameras, and asks anyone with information to come forward.
NPWS invested $1.9 million in providing new facilities for visitors at this popular location, said NPWS Area Manager, Brendon Neilly.
“The vandalism is extremely disappointing as the new amenities were designed to better cater to the community’s needs and were only open a week before the attacks began,” Mr Neilly said.
“The repeated violence and destruction of the doors, hinges and locks has been reported to NSW Police who are looking into the matter.”
Mr Neilly said that on Boxing Day 2023, three doors of the Burrawang Reach women’s toilets were ripped off their hinges and locks damaged; while on 15 January, one door in the Skiers mens toilet was ripped off its hinges. Further, on 30 January, two doors were ripped off their hinges at the Skiers toilets, and then on February 4/5, one door was ripped off the men’s toilets at Burrawang Reach and again locks were damaged.
Anyone with information is asked to report it to NSW Police Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via the NSW Police Crime Stoppers website.
