Missing manholes a danger zone for Lismore residents

Lismore City Council is urging residents to stay away from flood affected areas of the town, with the lifting of drain manholes by floodwaters creating a dangerous situation for locals.

“It is crucial for your own safety and others that no one enters a flood affected area,” Council said in a statement today.

“The tops of drain manholes have been lifted by flood waters, which means streets with water over them are NOT safe to walk through. For your own safety stay away.

“Due to the size of the flood, many buildings may be structurally unsound.

“We understand people want to return to their homes and businesses, but we MUST all wait until the SES gives the ALL CLEAR.”

Council said homes and business premises must be inspected by authorities before occupants are permitted to return.

It also confirmed that there is no sewage in town and no water in parts of the flood-affected areas.

“Please CONSERVE water.”

“This is no normal flood event, and is region wide. This means Emergency Services are extremely stretched.

“Please be patience and for your own safety, DO NOT enter flood affected areas,” Council reiterated.
