A man is due to face court charged over what NSW Police say was an unprovoked assault in the Sydney CBD overnight.
Police say a 59-year-old man was walking along George Street just after 7pm yesterday, when a younger man allegedly punched him once in the head.
“He fell unconscious backwards, hitting his head on the footpath,” NSW Police said in a statement.
“The younger man reportedly left the scene running towards Sussex Street.”
NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the man for multiple facial fractures and head injuries before he was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital in a serious condition. Police have been advised the man will be undergoing surgery today.
Following inquiries, police arrested a 37-year-old man at a nearby hotel on Sussex Street about 3.30am this morning.
He was taken to Day Street Police Station where he was charged with reckless grievous bodily harm. He was refused bail to appear in Parramatta Local Court today.
The CBD light rail service was disrupted for about 30 minutes as paramedics treated the injured man.
