Man charged after vicious rockpool robbery

A man will face court today charged with robbing and detaining a 67-year-old man at a rock pool near Wollongong at the weekend.

Police say that at around 2.30am on Sunday, a 67-year-old man was cleaning a public space near the Towradgi rock pools when he was approached and chased into the sand dunes by a younger man.

“The younger man allegedly demanded cash, before assaulting the older man multiple times,” NSW Police said in a statement.

“The older man, fearing for his safety, offered the younger man cash from his home.

“The pair walked to the older man’s unit, where the younger man allegedly stole a gold bracelet and bank card, before demanding the older man accompany him to withdraw cash from a nearby service station.”

Police say that while the offender was withdrawing cash, the older man sought assistance and contacted police.

“Following inquiries, a search warrant was executed at a home in Fairy Meadow about 1.15pm yesterday, where clothing and other items were seized for forensic examination.”

“A short time later, a 20-year-old man was arrested at the home and taken to Wollongong Police Station, where he was charged with assault with intent to rob, take/detain person with intent to obtain advantage, aggravated break and enter and commit serious indict offence – deprive liberty, and aggravated robbery.”

He was refused bail to appear in Wollongong Local Court today.
