Man, 69, charged with abuse of girl

A 69-year-old man has faced court charged over the alleged sexual abuse of a young girl in the NSW Southern Tablelands earlier this week.

On Wednesday this week, Police received reports that a 15-year-old girl had been sexually assaulted earlier that day by a man known to her.

“The matter was referred to the State Crime Command’s Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad, who commenced an investigation,” NSW Police said in a statement.

“Following inquiries, a 69-year-old man was arrested by investigators – with the assistance of officers attached to Hume Police District – about 11.35pm the same day at a house in Goulburn.”

The man was taken to Goulburn Police Station, where he was charged with three counts of aggravated sexual assault – victim under the age of 16 years, and aggravated sexual assault – deprive liberty (DV).

Police will allege in court the girl was in the care of the man when the assault took place.

The man appeared at Goulburn Local Court yesterday, where he was formally refused bail to reappear at the same court on March 16.
