Man, 58, lucky to be alive after mine shaft fall

A 58-year-old man was airlifted to hospital today after falling down a mine shaft while riding a quad bike on a property at Lightning Ridge.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter flew to the scene at 10am this morning following reports the man had fallen down the mine shaft, with his quad bike then landing on top of him.

“This was a multi agency response including NSW Ambulance Paramedics, NSW Police and Emergency Rescue Services,” the Westpac team said.

“The 58-year-old male was recovered from the mine shaft suffering limb and possible collar bone fractures and has been treated and stabilised by NSW Ambulance Paramedics and the Helicopter Critical Care Medical Team.

“The gentleman has since been airlifted to Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital in a stable condition for further        medical treatment.”
