Learner riders caught racing at more than twice the speed limit

Victoria Police officers impounded a man’s motorbike last week after the learner rider was detected doing 168km/h in an 80km/h zone in Vermont South.

Police say the rider was first spotted on Burwood Highway, between Eastlink and Springvale Road, on Thursday 19 October just after 7pm.

“Officers detected the rider travelling 168km/h in an 80km/h zone, while racing with another learner rider,” Victoria Police said in a statement.

The 26-year-old’s motorcycle was impounded for 30 days at a cost of $1,000.

It is expected the Springvale man will be charged on summons in relation to driving at a speed dangerous, exceeding the speed limit by 45/km/h or more and may face other traffic related offences.

The other learner driver sped off from officers, Victoria Police said.
