NSW Police investigators are appealing for information after 10 headstones in a Jewish cemetery were vandalised in a suspected hate crime in the lower Hunter Valley city of Maitland.
Officers from Port Stephens-Hunter Police District were called to the Maitland Jewish Cemetery on Louth Park Road in South Maitland, last Tuesday (31 January), where they discovered 10 headstones had been spray-painted with a Nazi symbol.
The cemetery is a heritage-listed closed cemetery which was in use from 1846 to 1934. The property is owned by Maitland City Council and was added to the NSW State Heritage Register in 2014.
“A crime scene was established with a number of items seized. They will be forensically examined,” NSW Police said in a statement.
Investigators are following a number of lines of inquiry and are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
