International students touch down in Darwin

The Northern Territory has become the first Australian jurisdiction to welcome back international students.

Sixty three international students from Vietnam, China, Indonesia, Japan and Hong Kong arrived in Darwin yesterday to recommence their studies at Charles Darwin University.

Minister for International Education, Nicole Manison said international education and training was a significant economic contributor to the Territory and the pilot program will help guide a wider re-entry of international students back to Australia.

“We were the first Government in Australia to bring back seasonal workers and now we are the first Government to bring back International Students. We are well on our way to becoming the comeback capital,” said Minister Manison.

“International students are a massive contributor to the Territory economy, with each student contributing an average of $40,693 each year.”

“By facilitating a pathway for international students to return to the Territory and to Australia we are helping to diversify the economy, grow our population and support local jobs.”

The students will undergo the mandatory 14 days quarantine at the Howard Springs Quarantine Facility before returning to campus.

To support the students through the quarantine government has also invested in a number of initiatives including awarding 31 International Student Wellbeing grants for events and activities for students to get involved in cultural festivals, employability skills training, social networking events, wellbeing workshops and employer meet and greet programs.

“The Northern Territory Government have commenced working with the international education sector for more international students to return to the Territory and study next year,” the Minister said.
