Young students from Sandringham Primary School gathered in Hampton RSL’s Gallipoli Memorial Garden today to listen to stories of local diggers.
The children were among the first to take part in the RSL’s Schools Visitation Program, financed by a Bayside City Council Annual Community grant.
Council says there will be 10 primary schools visiting the garden during the program.
Beneath the prickly Gallipoli oak and the two Lone Pines the garden has 10 rocks laid to reflect the geography of the Gallipoli Peninsula. They bear the names of the 92 diggers from Bayside who fell there.
“This is a peaceful place of reflection,” Chairman of Friends of Gallipoli Inc, John Basarin OAM said.
John said the school visits will allow young people to recognize and commemorate those from their own community who fought and died on the Turkish peninsula.
Council’s Annual Community Grants program supports initiatives proposed by community groups which strengthen and enrich community life through the provision of an improved range of leisure, cultural, community development, environmental, health, education, sporting and welfare programs and activities.
The local diggers’ stories can be read at hamptonrsl.com.au or visit at 25 Holyrood St, Hampton.
