Granny Hay takes 100th birthday flight

The Whyalla Wings event brought smiles to the faces of young and old at the weekend – none more so than the lady affectionately known as ‘Granny Hay’.

She had one wish for her 100th birthday – to go up into the clouds in a helicopter! Thanks to the team from Barossa Helicopters, that wish came true on Saturday.

Granny Patricia Hay was joined by some of her family for the special occasion, with two of her grandsons getting to take the special flight with her.

Granny Hay could not contain her excitement, just about running down the ramp onto the tarmac ready to get into the helicopter. Prior to the flight, she received some special media attention, before her granddaughter Casey placed Granny Hay’s service medals upon her chest – a special moment.

Granny Hay says she had the most incredible time and is still reliving the moment and talking about it to friends.

Granny Hay was born in Dundee Scotland in 1922 and served in the Royal Airforce as a cook during the war. During her service, she met her future husband Frederick Hay. Patricia and Fred married, had three children then migrated to Adelaide in 1956.

She now has three children, eight grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren.
