Gerringong Library, one of Australia’s oldest free public libraries, is turning 150 this year.
Established in 1874 – five years after the Sydney Free Public Library – Gerringong Library has played a vital role in the community ever since, Kiama Municipal Council said today.
From humble beginnings, with 80 books in Mary Ann Scott’s grocery store, to its new home at the redeveloped School of Arts with 7800 items, the library has a rich history worth celebrating.
To mark the occasion, our library team is hosting a sesquicentennial exhibition, opening Thursday 7 November (5:30-7:30 pm). The exhibition includes artefacts and stories of the library’s evolution over the years.
The Gerringong Historical Society is also hosting ‘A Night at the Museum’ with journalist and broadcaster Caroline Baum speaking on the importance of libraries in shaping communities.
You’ll also be able to discover more about Gerringong’s history through the Walking Tours app.
