Flood warning for Tuggerah Lake

The NSW SES is advising residents on the Central Coast at Tuggerah Lake to prepare to isolate, as moderate flooding is expected tonight and into tomorrow morning.

SES warnings have been issued for the following areas:

  • Yarramalong
  • Dooralong
  • Long Jetty
  • Chittaway Point
  • Chittaway Bay
  • Tacoma South
  • Killarney Vale
  • Berkeley Vale

Significant amounts of rain has fallen in the catchment area over the last few days at Wyong River and Tuggerah Lake.

NSW SES Northern Deputy Zone Commander, Superintendent Stephen Leahy, said volunteers have been working hard in the area to warn residents.

“We are expecting moderate flooding to isolate residents at Yarramalong and Dooralong today, and into Tuesday morning we will likely see moderate flooding at Tuggerah Lake at Long Jetty,” Superintendent Leahy said.

“We expect a number of properties to be inundated and are asking the public to take action now. Our crews are working directly with community members, providing sandbags and also advising them of their flood risk.

“Residents should either evacuate now while it is safe to do so, or prepare to isolate ahead of the peak later this afternoon.

“Once the flood peak arrives, it may be unsafe to leave.”

Superintendent Leahy said the NSW SES was closely monitoring the river and lake heights, with considerable rises following the recent rain.

“We’re reminding residents to be careful on the roads given the heavy rainfall,” he said.

“Roads may be dangerous, and we’ve already had a number of people rescued from flood waters over the last 24 hours at Wyong, Gosford and Warringah.

“If you come across a flooded road, please do not drive through the flood waters, turn around and find an alternative route.”

Across the state, NSW SES volunteers have responded to 262 incidents in the last 24 hours, including nine flood rescues.
