Detectives have charged a 25-year-old Yandina man with three counts of murder following a horror crash in Federal last week that killed three people, including 65-year-old Hay Point grandfather, Terry Bishop.
The Yandina man, who Queensland Police allege was driving a stolen car at the time of the crash, is expected to face Maroochydore Magistrates Court today.
Yesterday, Mr Bishop’s family released a photo in the hope it would encourage witnesses to the collision to come forward.
Police say Mr Bishop was travelling north along the Bruce Highway in a silver 2012 Nissan Navara dual cab utility when he stopped to pick up a 25-year-old woman, who was in a distressed state at the side of the road.
The woman’s boyfriend, driving the allegedly stolen car, then chased Mr Bishop’s ute, before ramming it from behind and forcing it onto the southbound lanes of the highway. A short time later, both vehicles were involved in a fatal collision with a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.
In a statement, Mr Bishop’s family said they were devastated by the loss of the much-loved grandfather of five.
“Terry Bishop is a 65-year-old retired resident of Hay Point (Mackay) in recent years and a former long-term resident of Northgate (Brisbane),” the statement reads.
“Terry was travelling to Brisbane on Friday to attend a family members wedding the day following the incident.
“He leaves behind a wife, daughter, son and five young grandchildren who all loved him dearly.
“Our family is absolutely devastated, he is a man that would always go out of his way to help anyone in need.
“Our hearts go out to the other victim’s families and the first responders in this horrific tragedy.”
