Expressions of Interest open for Wagga rail trail committee

Wagga Wagga City Council is calling for Expressions of Interest (EOI) from members of the community to join a committee that will oversee the planning and development of the proposed Wagga Wagga to Ladysmith Rail Trail project.

The project is proposed to turn the Ladysmith to Wagga Wagga section of the old Tumbarumba railway line, which has been disused since 1987, into a walking and cycling path.

The Wagga Wagga to Ladysmith Rail Trail Steering Committee will ensure alignment with the NSW Rail Trails Framework, Council resolutions, and regional priorities.

It will also provide an avenue for input, communication and consultation between landowners, the community, Council, and government representatives.

The proposed rail trail will make use of the old Tumbarumba railway line which has been disused since 1987.

Council’s Manager City Growth & Regional Assets, Ben Creighton says there are various positions available on the committee.

“We are looking for members of the community to join the committee, alongside two Councillors, members of the Wagga Wagga to Ladysmith Rail Trail and Riverina Highland Rail Trail groups, a Wiradjuri representative and non-voting Council staff members,” Mr Creighton said.

“We want to ensure we can gain all perspectives of stakeholders; therefore, we invite anyone that has an interest in the Wagga Wagga to Ladysmith Rail Trail to put their name forward.

“We are currently calling for EOIs for the positions of Independent Chairperson, impacted landowners and members of the community in general.”

The Independent Chairperson will chair the committee meetings, guiding them and ensure fair and balanced discussion and decision making.

The right candidate will have experience in chairing committees and/or boards and working with community groups.

Representatives of impacted landowners on the committee will be directly impacted by the proposed rail trail corridor (i.e., owner of an adjoining property) and have the ability to represent the views of all impacted landowners.

The remaining positions for committee members will need to have an interest in contributing to the project, live within the Wagga Wagga LGA, and be committed to working collaboratively with other committee members, stakeholders and the community.

Applications for positions on the Wagga Wagga to Ladysmith Rail Trail Steering Committee close Thursday 16 October at midnight.
