Canberra airport gunman charged

A 63-year-old NSW man has been charged following yesterday’s shooting incident at Canberra Airport that forced an evacuation of the facility.

ACT Police allege the armed man entered the terminal and fired several shots into windows near the airport’s southern check-in desks at around 1:25 pm on Sunday.

AFP airport police quickly apprehended the man. No-one was injured in the incident.

The airport was evacuated with police cordoning off part of the check-in area.

Planes were also grounded on the tarmac for several hours while police secured the area.

The alleged offender is facing charges of discharging a firearm at a building, unlawful possession of a firearm, and discharging a firearm near a person causing alarm. He will face ACT Magistrates Court this morning.
