Brisbane free bus trial rolls out

A 12-month bus trial connecting key art, cultural and entertainment destinations within Brisbane’s most popular tourism precinct will begin its first service today.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the free South Brisbane Bus Loop will travel in an anti-clockwise direction along Grey Street, Montague Road, Vulture Street and Tribune Street.

“This free service gives residents and visitors the opportunity to experience everything South Brisbane has to offer,” Lord Mayor Schrinner said.

“From South Bank Parklands and the State Library to the Queensland Museum, QPAC and the Montague Markets, the route is a highlights reel of some of Brisbane’s most popular inner-city destinations.

“While the costs of living are rising, this free service allows people to leave the car at home, reducing costs and easing congestion through this popular precinct.”

As construction continues on the transformational projects, including Queen’s Wharf and the turn-up-and-go Brisbane Metro, the introduction of this bus loop will make public transport the easy and convenient choice, the Lord Mayor said.

Business South Bank (BSB) Chair, John Barton said he was thrilled Council had prioritised the new bus loop which would help support local businesses on the route.

“As South Bank is Brisbane’s number one tourism destination, this service will enable people to access multiple destinations in the precinct during their visit, which may in turn increase the visitor length of stay,” Mr Barton said.

“The residential and business population of South Brisbane and West End has grown considerably, with the residential population expected to double by 2036, so additional infrastructure will help.

“We thank the Brisbane Council for this trial service and encourage all our members and the public to use it.”

The bus loop will run on a trial for 12-months with the possibility of an extension, using existing stops as well as five new and rebranded bus stops, which are a distinctive green and white.
