NSW Police have charged a 16-year-old boy with deliberately lighting fires that led to two recent bushfires in the state’s Murrumbidgee region.
Police say emergency crews were called to Scenic Hill, Griffith, following reports of two bushfires at around 5pm on Saturday, January 7th.
“Members of the Rural Fire Service (RFS) attended and attempted to extinguish the blaze, which burnt an estimated 17ha over several days. The fire has since been extinguished,” NSW Police said in a statement.
“Officers attached to Murrumbidgee Police District commenced an investigation into the cause of the fires and, just before 5pm yesterday, arrested a 16-year-old boy in the Leeton area.”
He was taken to Leeton Police Station where he was charged with two counts of intentionally cause fire and be reckless as to its spread, and one count of possess prohibited drug.
The teen was granted strict conditional bail to appear before a children’s court on Monday, February 20th.
