Applications open for Queensland Seniors Month grants

The Queensland Government has opened applications for the 2025 Queensland Seniors Month grants, with organisations encouraged to apply for funding to host fun and inclusive events and activities later this year.

Held from 1 to 31 October, the month celebrates older Queenslanders, promotes positive attitudes towards ageing and encourages community connections.

Funding of up to $2,000 is available for not-for-profits, local governments, charitable and community organisations, schools and libraries as part of the $100,000 grant program.

Last year’s calendar of events included jazz concerts, a gardening competition, aqua aerobics, pickleball matches and more.

Minister for Families, Seniors and Disability Services, Amanda Camm said Queensland’s seniors deserved to be celebrated, cared for and connected to their communities.

“It’s a wonderful time to show our seniors just how much we value their contributions to our communities, workplaces and families,” Minister Camm said.

“I would encourage any eligible organisation to apply for a grant and help build an age-friendly Queensland for everyone.”

The safety and wellbeing of Queensland seniors is a priority for the Crisafulli Government which is why a Parliamentary Inquiry into elder abuse is underway, as part of the Government’s First 100 Days Plan.

“Elder abuse has devastating consequences for an older person’s social, economic, physical and mental health and wellbeing,” Minister Camm said.

“We all have a role to play in preventing elder abuse and making sure older Queenslanders feel safe and supported in our communities.”

Council on the Ageing (COTA) Queensland chief executive Darren Young said Queensland Seniors Month will be a great opportunity to discover new programs and activities, as well as supports and services.

“Celebrating its 65th year, Queensland Seniors Month will continue to bring people of all ages, cultures and abilities together, uniting them through shared interests and passions,” Mr Young said.

“Throughout October, hundreds of event organisers will host a range of online and face-to-face events and activities.”

Local councils and community groups are also encouraged to apply for a grant to support hosting inclusive events and activities.

“Whether it be attending a dance or cooking class, sharing a meal, a morning tea or concert, or having a chat with an older neighbour over the fence, I encourage everyone to step outside their comfort zone and get involved in a Seniors Month activity,” Mr Young said.

Queensland Seniors Month kicks off on the United Nations International Day of Older Persons (1 October) and includes National Grandparents Day (26 October). Funded events and activities must take place during October 2025. Applications are open until Friday 28 March 2025 and can be made online through SmartyGrants – visit qldseniorsmonth.smartygrants.com.au.
