Four Sydney council areas ordered into lockdown

Four Sydney local government areas have been placed into lockdown after NSW recorded 22 new locally-acquired cases of COVID-19 today.

Sydney’s Bondi cluster now sits at 65 cases.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said all but one of the cases was linked – leaving the only unconnected case being that of a 9-year-old boy from Waverley.

“We anticipate that close to 100% of everybody in a household is likely to get the virus if one person has had positive test results,” Ms Berejiklian said today.

The Premier this morning announced a week-long lockdown for residents in the municipalities of Woollahra, Waverley, Randwick and the City of Sydney.

“You need to stay at home unless absolutely necessary,” the Premier said.

“The necessary reasons include if you can’t work from home and you have to work outside the home. If you can’t get educated at home and you have to get educated outside of home. If you exercise outside, although we don’t want groups of more than 10.”

“And if you need to provide care or compassion to a relative. And fourthly, of course, if you need to buy essential goods or services.”

Chief Health Officer, Kerry Chant said a person who attended Joh Bailey hair salon in Double Bay has been identified as the cause of the infection at the salon, as well as a nail salon (Fresh Nails) in Westfield Bondi Junction and Bondi’s Life cafe.

“A close contact of this person then introduced the infection to the Tropicana Cafe,” Dr Chant said.

“I’ve got significant concerns for patrons and staff of the Joh Bailey salon in Double Bay because we have at least three staff members who were working whilst infectious and with two confirmed cases among clients so far.”

It’s believed more than 900 clients attended the salon over the time that workers were potentially infectious.
