Tamworth to roll dice on Monopoly game fame

Australia’s ‘country music capital’ is set to be immortalised in the world’s most popular boardgame, with its very own official ‘Tamworth’ version to be released.

Tamworth Regional Council has been in discussions with manufacturers of Monopoly, Winning Moves under license from Hasbro about an official Tamworth Monopoly board.

The edition will see locally themed squares replace Mayfair and Park Lane from the original London Monopoly board and include a customised ‘Community Chest’ and ‘Chance’ playing cards, making the entire game a truly Tamworth experience.

Tamworth Region Mayor, Col Murray said it was an amazing opportunity for the region to be featured with its very own board of this iconic game.

“People will be able to take a piece of Tamworth home with them and battle it out over their favourite attraction or destination,” Mayor Murray said.

“It also provides a great opportunity to advertise our region in a significant and lasting way.”

There are plans to include a special guitar piece in the game in addition to having locally themed squares and cards.

The game is scheduled to hit the shelves late this year, in time for Christmas and for the 50th anniversary of the Tamworth Country Music Festival in late January 2022.

The game will be sold exclusively through venues featured on the board and at the Tamworth Visitor Information Centre.

Monopoly first hit the shelves in 1935 – since then it has been played by more than 1 billion people. Today, it is played in 114 countries and enjoyed in over 47 different languages.
