Son, 53, charged with mother’s murder

Victorian Homicide Squad detectives have charged a man over the death of his 78-year-old Holocaust-survivor mother in Chelsea.

The 53-year-old Chelsea man, was taken into custody near his home address yesterday afternoon and has since been charged with one count of murder.

The charge follows the discovery of the body of his mother inside her Drinan Road home about 10.30am on Saturday.

Police were conducting a welfare check at the property when they located her body.

A friend of Ms Bednar told The Age, “She came from Hungary, her parents went through the Holocaust, she used to tell us about it. She mentioned the Hungarian uprising and I think they left Hungary after that.”

The man was due to appear in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court last night but refused to leave his police cell.
