Detectives from the Sexual Crimes Squad have arrested a man as part of their investigation into a sexual assault of a 90-year-old woman at an aged care facility in St Albans Park yesterday.
A 23-year-old St Albans Park man was arrested shortly after 9am and is currently being interviewed by police.
Police yesterday conducted a public appeal for information in relation to the incident – issuing an artist’s impression of the alleged offender (pictured) – after the elderly woman was sexually assaulted at the Aldershot Road facility about 4.45am yesterday morning.
“I understand how much concern an incident like this causes in the community, so being able to make an arrest in just over 24 hours is reassuring,” said Detective Acting Inspector Mark Burnett of the Victoria Police Sexual Crimes Squad.
“Locating the person responsible has been a significant priority for Sexual Crime Squad investigators ever since the matter was reported to police,” he said.
“Our thoughts are with the victim and her family at this time and they will be offered a range of support services.
“I’d also like to thank the community and the media for all their support in sharing the information we released yesterday.”
