Remembering Evelyn’s amazing 110 years

On this day in 2016, Carinity Clifford House aged care resident Evelyn Vigor turned an amazing 110 years old.

At the time, Evelyn (pictured on her 110th birthday) was the oldest living Queenslander and the fourth oldest Australian. A staunch supporter of the Australian Liberal Party, she also had the distinction of being the oldest voter in Queensland.

Evelyn Myrtle Vigor was born in Laidley, Brisbane, Queensland, six weeks premature and the eldest of nine.

She met her husband James Edward Vigor, a Kingaroy dairy farmer, in 1929, and married him on 28 November 1931.

Before she was married, she had been a horse riding champion and a seamstress. After tying the knot, Evelyn lived with her husband on a farm near Kingaroy, north-west of Brisbane. The couple had three children, Hedley James, Evelyn Jean and Janet Winifred.

Sadly, Evelyn’s husband passed away in 1981.

Evelyn continued to ride horses into her 80s and had lived with a positive outlook on life, despite fracturing both of her hips in her 90s. She also survived breast cancer at 102.

Evelyn passed away on April 26, 2016 in at the Carinity Retirement home in Clifford, Brisbane, Australia, aged 110 years and 108 days.
