New Hastings seniors learning hub opens

The new multi-purpose Hastings Seniors Learning Hub is officially open.

State Member for Eastern Victoria, Jane Garrett today joined Mayor Despi O’Connor and Cerberus Ward Councillor Lisa Dixon at the new facility to celebrate the project’s completion.

The new $1.4 million community hub was supported by a $546,000 grant from the Victorian Government’s Growing Suburbs Fund.

The project saw the former Hastings Senior Citizens centre refurbished and extended to provide a new home for both the Hastings Senior Citizens Club and Hastings U3A.

The new hub offers adult education classes, learning programs and an IT room, plus indoor and outdoor recreation and social spaces.

“A fabulous transformation has taken place at this site. We’ve turned a rather dated facility that was not fit for purpose into a wonderful community resource,” said Mayor O’Connor.

“We all know how important social connection and lifelong learning are for our physical and mental health. Hastings now has a one-stop-shop that offers just that. This hub will help our seniors stay healthy and engaged with the world.”

Hastings has a large population of seniors, with around 27% of residents aged over 60.

“I’m delighted our older residents have this new hub to support their wellbeing,” said Councillor Dixon.

“I’d like to thank the Victorian Government for its support in helping us bring this project to life. This facility has significantly added to the liveability of the Hastings township”.
