Mornington pivots to online Seniors Festival

Mornington Peninsula Shire is pivoting to offer a “reimagined” 2021 Seniors Festival in October.

Mayor, Despi O’Connor said the Shire, the local community, businesses and organisations had put together a COVIDSafe calendar of events, complementing a host of online and radio programming through the Victorian Seniors Festival website.

“This October is the 39th Seniors Festival on our Peninsula. Be a part of the celebrations from the safety of your own home. With so much on offer you’re sure to find something of interest. Enjoy!” said Mayor O’Connor.

She said Council had many local events and offers across the Peninsula including:

  • Free plant giveaway at The Briars;
  • Compost Like a Champion! Workshop at the Eco Living Display Centre;
  • Tai Chi at Our Libraries;
  • Community choir workshop;
  • Downsizing your home online information sessions;
  • Plus, lots more!

“Our seniors are once again adapting to the festival being presented virtually. Attending the online events are a great way to keep active, learn new skills and connect with other people too. It’s shaping up to be a busy and live October!” said Peninsula Advisory Committee for Elders delegate and Cerberus Ward Councillor, Lisa Dixon.

The festival launches with the inaugural Australian Ageism Awareness Day on Friday 1 October. The day coincides with the UN’s International Day of Older Persons and is an important way of raising awareness of ageism in the community.

The ‘Ageism. Know it. Name it’ campaign from EveryAGE Counts is encouraging our community to attend a virtual morning tea to get conversations brewing about the impacts of ageism on our community – socially, economically and even physically. The morning teas can be hosted on any date and time that’s suitable.
