Man arrested for alleged fake QR code fraud

A 51-year-old Edwardstown man has been arrested after police say he placed fake QR codes over business COVID check-in QR codes in an attempt to steal the personal details of patrons.

Members of the SA Police COVID Compliance Section attended an address in Edwardstown today following allegations that false QR codes has been placed over business QR Codes at South Plympton on Sunday.

“As a result, a 51-year-old man was arrested and charged with two counts of obstructing operations carried out relative to COVID-19 under the Emergency Management Act,” SA Police said in a statement.

“He was further charged with possess prohibited weapon after police searched the man’s home allegedly finding a double-side knife which is classified as a prohibited weapon.”

The arrested man has been refused bail and was due to appear before Adelaide Magistrates Court late today.

“Any person found to be tampering or obstructing with business QR codes will likely face arrest and court penalty of up to $10,000,” Police said.

“SAPOL reassure the public that no personal data has been released through these fake QR codes.”

The police investigation is continuing. If a business or customer suspects that a false QR code has been attached to a COVID Safe Plan they should contact the police assistance line on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
