A 51-year-old man will face court today after allegedly driving at an off-duty police officer in Sydney’s Inner West yesterday.
Police say that just before 5.30pm on Tuesday, a woman was driving along Richardson Crescent, Tempe, when she heard a car horn being sounded repeatedly and saw a Subaru Forrester driving aggressively behind her.
“A short time later, the SUV overtook the woman’s 2021 Audi stationwagon on Warren Road, allegedly travelling on the wrong side of the road for some distance,” NSW Police said in a statement.
At the intersection of Warren and Illawarra Road, Police say the SUV stopped, blocking the woman from continuing.
A man then got out of the SUV and allegedly verbally abused the woman.
“An off-duty police officer, who witnessed the incident, identified himself as a police officer and attempted to speak with the man,” NSW Police said.
“The man then allegedly threatened to set a large dog – which was sitting in the front passenger seat – onto the officer.
“The man then returned to his vehicle, allegedly drove through a red light, before reversing twice in the direction of the officer, who had to take evasive action to avoid being struck by the SUV.”
Police say the man then drove from the scene.
Following inquiries, a man was arrested at an apartment in Marrickville Road, Marrickville, about 6.30pm last night.
The 51-year-old man was taken to Newtown Police Station where he was charged with drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, use offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention, predatory driving, not stop at stop line at red light, use/allow use of horn/similar warning device unnecessarily, and attempt stalk/intimidate intend fear of harm (personal).
He has been refused bail and will appear in Newtown Local Court today.
