A 61-year-old man is due to face a Sydney court today charged with injuring native birds in a suitcase in Sydney’s east yesterday.
In a statement, NSW Police said that at around 5.30pm on Saturday, police were called Anzac Parade, Malabar, following reports of animal abuse.
“Officers attached to Eastern Beaches Police Area Command arrived and were told a man had allegedly used fishing line to catch two native birds before putting them in a suitcase and leaving the scene,” NSW Police said.
“Following inquiries, police attended a home at the same location where they located the two injured birds in an animal carrier.”

Both birds were taken to a Sydney vet in stable conditions where they are undergoing treatment.
Police arrested a 61-year-old man at the home before taking him to Maroubra Police Station, where he was charged with commit an act of cruelty upon an animal and harm or attempt to harm a protected animal.
Police will allege in court that the man shook the suitcase that contained the two native birds – both Long Billed Corellas – resulting in their injuries.
