Happy 100th birthday Ron!

Happy birthday to Ronald (Ron) Wylie, who turns 100 years old today.

In July 1939, Ron enlisted in the Merchant Navy. During this period, merchant vessels were requisitioned into naval service by the Commonwealth Government. The Merchant Navy sailed flying the Australian Red Ensign Flag and members were issued with “MN” badges to show they were in military service when they went ashore.

Ron served in various theatres of conflict. Many of his voyages involved evacuating civilians from Hong Kong, Singapore, the Dutch East Indies, Indochina, New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. He made several trips to Darwin to evacuate civilians, and transport troops and supplies to combat zones in New Guinea, Bougainville and the Solomon Islands. He performed most of these duties under constant threat of air attack.

By 1945, Ron was a 2nd mate (3 officer) in charge of navigation, watches and cargo loading, and discharge operations.

Ron’s service gave him a real sense of purpose and a profound appreciation of the expertise, dedication and sacrifice shown by his fellow shipmates in this dark period of history.

The whole time he was away, Ron carried a photo of his mother and brother and he still often thinks about the young men who did not return.

In November 1945, Ron was asked by shipping company, Burns Philp Australia, to work as a Foreman Stevedore on the ‘The Hungry Mile’ wharves of Sydney’s Darling Harbour where he organised the loading and discharge of cargo.

He eventually returned to the sea in 1968 as a 2nd mate.

Ron credits his long life to having a loving, supportive and caring partner to share his life with.

He feels he has had a very fortunate life despite experiencing the best and worst that life has to offer.

Happy birthday Ron and thank you for your service. #TYFYS#OurVeterans
