Barilaro’s curious response to scandal query

Departing NSW Deputy Premier, John Barilaro, has given a curious response to a journalist’s question about “any other scandals” within political ranks while announcing his resignation from the role and from politics today.

A reporter at this morning’s press conference asked Mr Barilaro if there were any other political scandals about to break, following Friday’s revelation that departing Premier Gladys Berejiklian was the subject of an ICAC investigation.

Mr Barilaro did not answer ‘no’ but instead said “let’s see what occurs” in the months ahead.

“If that was case, I wouldn’t be allowed to comment anyway,” the departing politician clarified.

“As I said, I just don’t make any comments around the ICAC. The weeks, the months ahead, let’s see what occurs. Today, I have decided to go of my accord.”

Mr Barilaro said he had been planning to leave politics “at a time in the future” but said recent events gave him “an honest opportunity to do this in a transparent way”.

“What occurred on Friday [Berejiklian resignation] has not played in any part in the decision that I’ve made,” he said.

“I had another date picked in mind – not too far off – but I just think with the opportunities that have now arisen, it would be unfair at some point this week that under Dominic Perrottet as premier, he would be swearing in a new cabinet.

“It would be unfair and not right to go down to Government House, get sworn in and only weeks later to step aside.”

He said online attacks had played a big part in his decision to leave politics.

“I don’t know how many of you can endure what I’ve endured online.”

“I feel for young men and women, young boys and girls that get bullied on social media. I feel for them because as someone who has been around the traps, – a 49-year-old man that has played it rough and tough – I’ve got to tell you it has made it very difficult for me…when you get online and the abuse you cop, started by disgusting, vile, racist commentary.

Mr Barilaro said he would take a rest over Summer before deciding on his next career direction.

“I have no job. I can make it clear – I’m not going into any job. I have spoken to a number of recruiters about what is out there. I’m looking forward to see what is in the next chapter.”
