66-year-old man arrested in Howell murder case

Homicide Squad detectives have arrested a 66-year-old man this morning as part of their investigation into the 2007 death of Joanne Howell in Hughesdale.

In a statement released this afternoon, Police said the Casterton man was arrested at his home address and will now be interviewed by police.

Last month police publicly appealed for further information in relation to the death of the 51-year-old, releasing a new digital composite image of a man seen acting suspiciously near Ms Howell’s Hughesdale home about the time she was murdered.

Ms Howell, 51, who in the 1970s had performed ABC pop music show Countdown, was found just before 11.20pm on April 21, 2007, bashed and strangled in her apartment in Poath Road, Hughesdale, in Melbourne’s south-east.

Paramedics attended but she died at the scene.

Inspector Day told media last month that after an extensive review of the case, detectives were “very, very close” and “right on the cusp of solving” the case.
