Detectives from the Mildura Crime Investigation Unit are appealing for public information as they continue to investigate the death of Terrence McCallion who was found unresponsive in the Murray River almost six years ago.
The 55-year-old man was located fully clothed in the water by passers-by onboard a houseboat between Bruce’s Bend and Psyche Pumps, Mildura about 3pm on May 1, 2015.
“Another man was on the bank at the time and began yelling out for those on the houseboat to help. The man, who is a person of interest to police, is believed to have left the scene in Terrence’s white Nissan Pulsar shortly after,” Victoria Police said in a statement.
Police say the group used a small boat to recover the Buronga man and commenced CPR before emergency services arrived.
Terrence sadly died in hospital later that night.
Despite a thorough investigation, detectives are still working to piece together the circumstances which led Terrence to enter the river that afternoon.
Police suspect he was assaulted and have spoken to the man of interest on numerous occasions since the incident.
Investigators are hoping more people in the community may have information about Terrence’s earlier movements on Thursday 30 April and the morning of Friday, May 1.
“We haven’t given up on solving the case and are hopeful someone in the community is now ready to come forward with information,” said Mildura Crime Investigation Unit Detective Acting Sergeant Adam Brymer.
“Terrence’s family have a right to know of the circumstances in which led him to his death so they can get the closure they deserve,” he said.
“No matter how small or insignificant the information may be, it could be all we need to piece together the case.”
“If you know anything about Terrence’s whereabouts in the lead up to his death, then now is the time for you to come forward and speak to us.”
Police have also released images of Terrence’s vehicle, which had a distinctive spider sticker on its back-right door, in the hope someone may have seen it prior to or following the incident.
