Goulburn Regional Art Gallery has announced it will be hosting a launch of Patricia Piccinini’s Skywhalepapa and Skywhale – two monumental sculptures in the form of hot air balloons – at Seiffert Oval, Goulburn on Saturday November 30th.
As part of a National Gallery touring event, Skywhales Across Australia will be launched in
Goulburn. Gates will open to attendees from 4am, with the event to include the balloons’ momentous inflation, and the launch to occur simultaneously with the rising sun.
Concluding at 7am, the balloons will be brought back to the ground, with special hands-on programs for kids and families to follow at the Gallery.
Internationally renowned Australian artist, Patricia Piccinini says she believes Skywhales Across Australia is not only two spectacular sculptures but a performance piece.
“I imagine visitors assembling to watch Skywhalepapa coming to life, with a single skywhale figure we have a character, but with the two we have a relationship, and a narrative,” she said.
“This is an incredibly exciting and ambitious event for the Gallery, and a wonderful way to cap off the artistic program for 2024. Patricia Piccinini is one of Australia’s best known
artists and we are thrilled to host the iconic Skywhales in Goulburn,” said Yvette Dal Pozzo,
Director, Goulburn Regional Art Gallery.
Skywhales Across Australia is a National Gallery Touring Event, supported by the Australian Government through Visions of Australia and the National Collecting Institutions Touring Outreach Program.
